ABOUT

I love all sorts of crafts and enjoy the challenge of learning new skills, but of them all, pottery is the one that I love best.  I have been making and teaching pottery since 1997 and it still fascinates and surprises me.   There always seems to be something new to try, something to inspire, or to challenge, or a technique to master.

The pottery I most enjoy making is largely based in the tradition of english ceramics. I find it inspiring to think that the techniques I now use have been passed down through the centuries, and there is such a wealth of knowledge to be found in the history of this craft.

It is especially rewarding to be able to make something which is useful and can add a bit of beauty to everyday activities, and there is nothing quite as pleasing as laying a table with beautiful, unique pieces of pottery, made to be used and loved.

However, even an enthusiastic potter sometimes needs something else to occupy them, something a little less messy perhaps, or something that can be done in front of a warm fire on a cold winter's day! And that is why I am also keen on spinning, knitting and weaving.  Spinning is a wonderfully relaxing way to spend time and I get a great deal of satisfaction from using my handspun yarns.  I use natural dyes such as chamomile and woad to give colour to my yarns, and use them to make textiles to compliment my pottery. I like to think it all ties together in the end!
